Born in Leeds in 1971, Sheryl studied art at Jacob Kramer School of Art followed by a degree from Leeds Metropolian University. After teaching art for a number of years, Sheryl became a full time artist in 2001.
During her studies, Sheryl was greatly influenced by the dramatic light contrasts used by the Renaissance artists and also the turbulent land and seascapes of artists such as Turner. Sheryl has combined these influences and approaches to create her own unique vision. Working both in oil and acrylic paints, Sheryl’s technique involves creating layers gradually with brushes and pallet knives to build up a vibrancy and depth. The resulting work has a decidedly contemporary feel despite its very classical composition and traditional technique.
Sheryl’s vision of the light penetrating vast tempestuous skies above the landscape is recognisable as her distinctive style. Taking inspiration from the dramatic Cumbrian Fells and windswept high moors of the North Pennines where she is based, Sheryl paints scenes depicting those atmospheric connections between sky and land and her work is an emotional response to those remote yet vast places that she loves to visit.
Sheryl is married with grown up children. She has had a number of very successful solo exhibitions and has many collectors both in the UK and further afield.
