Born in 1950 in Cumbria, Tobias Harrison is the son of two celebrated Lake District artists – flower painter Audrey Johnson and figuratist Claude Harrison. Tobias studied pottery at school and then college forging a successful career as a potter for 30 years. In 2001, aged 50, he felt ready for a change and embraced the challenge of painting having not painted or drawn for 30 years, and never in oils. Tobias Harrison describes his approach to painting as ‘straightforward’. He likes to paint still life realistically, capturing colour and texture. Tobias strives to not merely copy the subject but to explain it through paint whilst keeping everything as simple as possible. In addition to still life, Tobias Harrison also paints figurative subjects often with an interesting surreal twist. Tobias Harrison lives with his wife in Southern France spending part of the year on a barge discovering the rivers and canals of Europe. He still has family in England and is a regular visitor here.
